Instructors Tony Miller is a 5th Dan. Tony has been practicing Aikido since 1979. The late Ken Roberts was also a 5th Dan before his passing in 2022.

 

In Tony’s words “Kicks and punches are not taught in Aikido. Our first movement is to avoid then break balance. Then control the attacker with a throw or a lock.   We train in 3 forms -  Kata (preset forms), Self-defence and Competition.”

 

Ken added, “We also train with Weapons. Where the student can develop the understanding between the origins of Aikido and the present day Aikido. ”

Tony Miller Sensei

 

I started Aikido at the YMCA Ann St Brisbane mid 1979. 5th Kyu 13/12/79. I changed jobs and could not attend one of the classes at the YMCA, so I went to the Capalaba PCYC on Friday evenings. Mid 1981 Ken and I started taking the junior class at Capalaba PCYC before the main class on Fridays. Around April/ May 1982 the Capalaba Coach Ian Box left for Japan, Ken and I took over running the club. Was graded to 1st Dan August 1984 I started the Bayside Aikido Club at Wynnum PCYC March 1990 and Ken took over at Capalaba Was graded to 5th Dan 30/3/2012 My first International Competition was in Vandalia, Ohio, USA in 1995, since then I have been to Imabari Japan, Brisbane, Leeds UK, Katsuura Japan, back to Vandalia, Ohio, USA, Kyoto Japan, London, Osaka Japan and the Gold Coast.

Ken Roberts Sensei ( - 2022)

 

Ken has been involved in Aikido training for 36 years, he was Qld open champion for 3 years, retiring undefeated.  He has been a member of the Australian team for over 20 years, taking part in world championships in Australia, Japan and the UK.  Ken has also refereed in Australian and international competitions.

 

In 2013 Ken reached the quarter finals in the all Japan Championship with Tony Miller as his partner.
